It may sound very sarcastic for Indians, but it looks like Indians don't play instruments (either Indian or Western), just for enjoying "learning". They learn it because they have long term plans associated with it. Many of the Western universities have certain incentives for students with extracurricular activities, like dance, music or sports. So Indians treat music as one of the extracurricular activities, to keep their options open for seeing the Western world. I am not saying there is anything wrong with being ambitious and planning a child's life from a young age (mostly by parents). I want to say that the Indian children reflect their parents' ambitions over here. Indian children's ambitions are NOT children's "own" ambitions. The end result of this process may be, the child may fail in the activities which parents have planned for them OR the child may be successful. If a child fails, the child builds up a complex in him/her that they could not fulfill their parents expectations. If the child succeeds, his/her parents develop un-natural expectations from the child, something like "returning the parents' favour back". And that is how the Indian Culture remains alive, where in young age parents take care of the child. And in old age, a child takes care of parents.
