Will it be good for engineers if "programming" is NOT treated as a "special skill"?

What is Engineering?

Engineering is the field of applying scientific principles and mathematics to solve problems through the design, creation, and maintenance of structures, machines, systems, and processes. It is a practical discipline focused on innovation, problem-solving, and developing solutions for everything from bridges and electronics to software and energy systems. 


What does it signify when a person is treated as a "programmer"?

"Software Programmer" is called "Software Engineer" in India. And I think it is extremely important to call him/her as an "engineer", because the skill is THAT important. It is as important as other engineering fields like "Electrical", "Mechanical" "Civil" etc. Software Engineering is also based on strong "Engineering Fundamentals". However my personal opinion is if "Engineering" is a ladder, then "software engineering" is its first step. Other Engineering fields should be based on top of this first step. That means, while thinking about any other engineering tasks, we should first think of "Is there any kind of automation possible?". "Can we integrate the task at hand, with any other engineering task?". For example: When it comes to automating the "train track changes", which are currently "manual", we know that we have to go for introducing "electrical motors" for track changes. And they can be collectively automated by "software programs". That makes the technical ladder seem like "Software Programs" which access "Electrical Motors" which access "Mechanical Movements". So we can see that a "Software Programs" is a glue to stick all Engineering fields together. "Software Programs" need Logical and Mathematical and perhaps Statistical ability. In the current scenario, a lot of focus is given to the "Syntactical" aspects of "Programs". For Example: Will we need a "semicolon" or "colon" in the "if statement"? I think having ONLY a "Syntactical Approach" to software programmers is extremely wrong treatment to "Software Programmers". The sad fact is, this approach is followed even in the "Programming Interviews and Programming Exams". I think Software Programming interviews should be all about testing "Logical, Mathematical and Statistical (if required)" approach/ability. My personal opinion is each engineer these days, should have two specializations by default: one is "software programmer" and another is "core engineering (that is electrical, mechanical, civil)"
